Always wondered what the hype is around the farmers market? The Gert and her did some research about the benefits of shopping local for your body, mind and community. Check it out and feel free to share!

My one goal for this post is to encourage you to get out and explore your local community. The rest I think will follow…

Here are Gert’s TOP 3 REASONS TO GO LOCAL:

1. Holistically healthier for your body and mind
Did you know that, on average, your food travels between 1,200-2,700 miles from growth to point of sale? And how do you think that food stays fresh on the journey to your grocery store? You got it. Chemical preservatives. When you buy from local farmers, most of the food is coming from just a few miles down the street which means no preservatives needed to keep it fresh. Yes, the food might go bad faster than you are used to, but it is supposed to! If you have the same apple sitting on your counter from a month ago, something is wrong.
On top of the obvious health benefits, if you have ever been to a local farmers market, you know your mood is boosted immediately. I am not sure if it is all the colors, the atmosphere, the smells of fresh produce or the internal satisfaction or a combination of all the above, but it fucking rocks and you should try it.

2. Support local businesses (like me!)
I am a little bias here but small and family businesses are the heart and soul of a community (and our country). According to the Conway Center for Family Business,

Family businesses account for 64 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, generate 62 percent of the country’s employment, and account for 78 percent of all new job creation

We are literally the backbone of this country and that power is only continuing to rise. This is a time unlike any other and we need to celebrate and support the businesses that took the leap to make an impact!

3. A little thing called sustainability

This wraps the first two points together nicely. When your fuel your body and mind properly through local shopping, you are doing so much more than you think. You are helping to eliminate carbon emissions because there is less travel needed to get you what you need and get what you need to you! You are also eliminating the use of unnecessary plastic and other materials most farmers markets don’t carry.

YOU ARE MAKING YOUR COMMUNITY MORE SUSTAINABLE! Big businesses, because of their seemingly endless amounts of resources, can eat a small business for breakfast and not think twice about it. When you give your time, money and support locally, you are helping to build a sustainable foundation for the businesses that give your community is life and culture.

If you are still not convinced, please check out this price comparison chart that my bad ass Grindtern, Carolin made to show you there isn’t a very big difference in prices when it comes to shopping local.

Now get out there, grind and GO LOCAL!
